The terms female genital cutting (FGC), female circumcision, and female genital mutilation (FGM) are all used to describe the practice of partly or totally removing portions of the external female genitalia.
The World Health Organization (WHO) condemns the practice of FGM as damaging to women both physically and emotionally. FGM is typically done without anaesthesia or antibiotics. This practise is agonizing, painful and extremely dangerous. Many girls die of haemorrhage, many have chronic infections that they last all life, as also many problems with childbirth, in the conjugal relationship and the menstruation.
Since the practice is premised on the notion that women’s bodies are inherently flawed and require correction, it does not respect women’s inherent dignity. Respect for women’s dignity implies acceptance of their physical qualities – natural appearance of their genitalia and their normal sexual function. Similarly, because female genital mutilation is an intervention into one of the most intimate aspects of a woman’s life, her sexuality, the practice violates her privacy rights.
It is a fundamental violation to the human rights and against women...

"...the genital feminine mutilation
is a topic that concerns men and
women who believe in the equality,
dignity of all the human beings without distinction of race, religion or ethnic identity. This problem shouldn't be regarded as the problem of a group or
of a determined culture, no matter it
is African, Muslim or Christian."

I highly recommend the new book titled Plan BE, by Terry Hinkle
The book gives a summery of how religion devised such controls over females, why, and more importantly how you as a woman can avoid such controls of your mind and body...

It's a terrible thing that women are still suffering of the simple fact to be a woman...It ruins the lives of thousands of girls, who whall never have a normal sexual experienceor joy. It's all a question of a lack of education, a lack of attention for those who are suffering.

Yes this is an important topic Madalena, and i used to eagerly read about it in your profile on care2 as well as the paintings, it's a huge breach of humaity, done in the name of chastity, from what i know it's an old african tradition since we don't know it in other parts of the world as far as i know (i might be mistaken).
I have heard stories of girls die under fgm, which made many clerics as well as governments ban and forbid it, but for some people traditions aren't skin deep, and it would take effort and education to overcome such beliefs.

From my tiny experience we should address people putting into consideration thier culture, traditions, belief system so on and so forth. i have seen good hearted activists trying to fight such issues and help people, yet people only saw them as foriegners trying to destroy out culture or dominate it, of course this is most unfortunate but it's true, that's why the way we address people is the key to the solution.
