Now I introduce Séraphine Louis aka Séraphine de Senlis (1864-1942). This woman artist is considered as a naive and her art is close to the art of the mad.

The Fleurs des Champs that are on the right in the top row of pictures of the linked page is typical of her decorative work, that was possibly well in advance on her time. Click on picture to zoom.

The sale is on Tuesday in a Paris suburb auction house. The link I provided will be dead after the sale. Look at it now !

Irma Stern

Here is an announcement of Christie's in a press release for a sale in London on December 16 :

"2007 saw significant demand for South African art, with the sale at Christie’s of Irma Stern's stunning Congolese Woman for £569,300 (ZAR7.7m.), setting a new auction record for the artist. The select group of South African art offered in the upcoming sale is led by two further beautiful Irma Stern canvases from 1944: Roses in a vase (estimate £250,000-350,000), and Malay Girl with Hibiscus (estimate £250,000- 350,000) illustrated left. The two works date to the highpoint of Stern's career in the mid-1940s when she produced some of her most powerful and accomplished work. In a flurry of activity, stimulated and inspired by her travels to Zanzibar and Congo, Stern emerged as a great colourist and the present works show her on virtuoso form. These two paintings, one of a vase of red roses on a sumptuous golden ground, and the other of a richly exotic Cape Malay woman, embellished with the accent of a tropical red hibiscus flower, on a thickly palette-knifed jade ground, powerfully convey the artist’s legendary joie de vivre."

I made recently an article on this excellent woman artist. It is too early for me to prepare another one, but this is good opportunity to present this group with a woman artist who was among the best.

Note that ZAR is the South African Rand.

Hi Mada !

Thank you for requiring challenges ! I enjoy this game.
Any article on my network is a challenge for cultural information, but most of them do not deal with women artists.

Look at a previous article I made on Cindy Sherman. Her views on women condition is the key of her success.

Have a nice week-end.

Pierre :)
I am not well explained: There is less information on Lempicka that of other women artists.
I can prepare something about she. I love her art work.
Here you can see a video about her art work

On Tamara de Lempicka :

In France there are often paintings by her at auction, with a very specific style that is a sort of sensual and very personal Cubism for her best artworks.

Her "sexual choice" made her an icon of her close circle, and her character so amazed some followers that one of them reused her name for a pseudo. There is no family link between Tamara de Lempicka and the fashion designer Lolita de Lempicka (as also no relationship between Lolita de Lempicka and Vladimir Nabokov !)

That's all for now due to short available time all along the working week, but I will come back later to Tamara. Her dates were 1898-1980.

I made a short comment below on Eileen Gray, the Art Deco designer. Similar sexual preferences made her also come into the legend. Five armchairs she designed for the flat she shared with her girlfriend the singer Damia went to be the most important 20th century furniture group at auction a few years ago.
