The art is dead. It's just paint on a canvas, ink on a page...

If you were in a burning house and there was a cat and a Rembrandt, what would you save? The cat...you would save the cat, because the cat is alive. The art is dead. It's just paint on a canvas, ink on a page. To live for art is to deny life. It's just to destroy life.

For me art has always been synonymous peace, life.
This quote leaves me uneasy because living art is to live to create and creation is something in motion, full of life.

Mada,

In the past year there was a fire in my neighbour's appartement, which lives on the same floor, the 7 th, as I. There was only a very thin wall between her and my appartment. I called the fire-brigade and they said that the whole building and the building next to her appartement had to be evacuate, about 50 people. It was forbidden the use the elavator. I had only time to take my handbag and a coat, because they where on the way out. It was winter and very cold outside, I took 1 sec to say goodbye to my paintings. There is no time to think or to choose, your survival instincts take over. After a few hours, almost frozen we could go back to our homes, luckily for me I could embrass all my paintings back, and it was almost a miracle that I had no damage. It's only afterwards when you stand outside in the freezing cold, looking at the fire that thinking is coming back: I should done this or that, that you realize what you left behind.

Thanks to share your experience with us.
This is a great truth "There is no time to think or to choose, your survival instincts take over."

In every painting there is a soul of the artist, his energy. The cat or Rembrandt - I would save aRembrandt. A human or a Rembrandt - I would safe a human. Sory, I am not so sentimental and hypocritical about the animals. I eat them everyday just to satisfy my instincts, without saving a thing in our not perfect world...

I'd pick up the cat and put it under one arm and the Rembrandt under the other and run like hell! Sorry, all of my artwork is alive and so are my cats...

Hi Madalena, I saved my friend and her two children from fire a few months ago, on her wall in her lounge was a painting of a black cat that I had painted for her birthday.

In her lounge was her, and her twins aged 5 years old.

The room was a blaze at one end, I managed to get all three out at once, I never gave the cat painting a second thought, I was there to save my friends life and the life of her children.

I wouldn't care if there was a 1,000 Rembrandt's on the walls, my friend and her children came first.

I would save Rembrandt or Pieronymus or my works, but at the first time, my children, my man and me. Cats are the only animals, who I don't like. Sorry. And cats will alive, without my help. But I will alive. And I can' t jumping, but a cat can. And my family and the artworks need my help more.

This is just crap! If I was in a fire, I would save both, the cat AND the Rembrandt...and my own paintings too...Art destroying life? Who says this? people who never painted, who never wrote, who never made a movie or a play? ART IS LIFE, on the contrary: I never feel more alive than when I'm painting, because art is reinventing life, art is more than life... What is life then? Drinking until you drop, eating until you can't move, laying on a beach and get skin cancer?
Just think before you say stupid things.....
